Skeet’s Farm was founded in the 1950s by my grandparents, Skeet and Alice Statham, who raised polled Hereford cattle with care, pride and respect for the land and their animals. Today, I continue their legacy with a commitment to responsible animal husbandry, strong animal welfare standards and providing cattle with top genetics for our customers. Opposing the Save Our Bacon Act and the Food Security and Farm Protection Act is part of honoring that legacy.
These acts would significantly harm family farmers, consumers and democratic decision-making. Consumers across the country are asking for food produced with humane, transparent standards. These bills directly counter that demand by blocking states from setting animal welfare rules that reflect the values of their citizens.
For farmers, these bills would punish those who have already invested time, money and care into improving animal welfare. Small and mid-sized independent farms like ours rely on fair competition and the ability to meet market demand. These acts favor large industrial operations while taking away opportunities for family farms to remain profitable and competitive.
Perhaps most troubling, this legislation undermines democracy itself. It would overturn state laws passed through voter-supported ballot initiatives and strip states of their right to set standards for food safety, disease prevention, pest control and public health.
At Skeet’s Farm, we believe good farming means accountability — to our animals, our customers and our communities. We urge Sens. Bill Cassidy and John Kennedy and Rep. Julia Letlow to do everything possible to stop the misleadingly titled Save Our Bacon Act and Food Security and Farm Protection Act from ever becoming law.
