The Coastal Conservation League and seven landowners are appealing a Jasper County Council decision to rezone land for a sand mine.
The lawsuit claims the rezoning violates the county’s Comprehensive Plan, which designates the area for low-intensity development.
Concerns from residents include increased truck traffic, dust, and noise in the rural Grays community for up to 20 years.
The Jasper County Planning Commission had previously recommended that the council deny the rezoning request.
The Coastal Conservation League along with seven landowners in the Grays community of Jasper County are appealing a recent 4 to 1 decision by council approving a rezoning of property in their area for a sand mine.
Council voted 4 to 1 during its Feb. 17 meeting to approve a proposed sand mine in the Grays unincorporated community.
Over the past few months many area residents have raised concerns about locations of potential sand mines, including the one council approved and is now under appeal located at the southeast intersection of Heritage Road/ Highway 3 and Pine Level Road.
