A week after its move into a temporary location, Yellowstone Valley Animal Shelter’s future is still uncertain.
“I don’t think anyone has a clear grasp of how long we will be located at Lionheart,” said YVAS Community Engagement Coordinator Izzy Zalenski. “The welfare of animals is our highest priority. We can only thank Lionheart Cannabis for providing us space to continue our services and resources to help people and their pets throughout Yellowstone County.”
The shelter partnered last week with Lionheart Cannabis in Billings, setting up in the dispensary’s warehouse space. The move followed the evacuation of their previous building, due to a mishap during the burning of methamphetamine by the FBI which shut down the animal shelter in September.
Lionheart Cannabis at 6400 S. Frontage Rd. provided the space behind the dispensary’s storefront, which includes a large fenced-in enclosure around the perimeter.
Zalenski said those hoping to adopt at this time, the best first step is to check the YVAS website for pets available for adoption, then each pet will either be available to visit with a foster home or will be located at Lionheart.
If pets are available with a foster home, their contact information will be listed with the pet, and adopters can connect with them directly. For pets housed at Lionheart, people are welcome to call or stop by the temporary facility.
Zelenski said YVAS plans to host adoption events regularly, and to follow their socials for those updates.
Want to help?
“We are deeply grateful for the generosity of our community and every donation that supports our work,” said Zalenski.
YVAS is accepting donations at Lionheart, as well. Physical items such as food, blankets, or toys, may be dropped off at YVAS’ temporary location inside Lionheart Cannabis during our hours of operation.
Monetary contributions can be made through their website, on the Make A Gift page, or via Venmo at @yvas_mt.
“At this time, as our supply of physical items is sufficient, we especially welcome and appreciate financial donations to help us continue meeting the needs of the animals in our care.”
YVAS declined to comment on whether they plan to move back to their previous building on Monad Road, or if they will be looking for a new location, after their extended stay at Lionheart Cannabis. They are grateful for the accommodations though, in their time of need.
