The Winooski Natural Resources Conservation District is seeking people interested in implementing clean water practices on their properties.
As part of a partnership with the state, the district is involved with planning and monitoring for the Northern Lake Champlain, Lamoille and Winooski basins. One of the main goals is to reduce the amount of phosphorus going into the lake, as excess amounts can lead to algal blooms.
The state provides grants and loans to municipalities and nonprofits for projects that improve water quality through its Clean Water Fund. Eligible projects include planting riparian buffers, restoring lake shorelines, adding strategic wood to streams, restoring floodplains, stabilizing gullies and improving old logging and private roads.
How to get involved
The district is offering assessments to determine what practices might work on individual properties and their potential impact on phosphorus reduction.
Landowners and residents interested in contributing to the efforts can reach out to the district by completing a form on its website, www.winooskinrcd.org/surveys.
