(This version updates to include that the killed animals were ruffed lemurs.)
Six animals died early Thursday morning when a fire broke out at ZooWorld in Panama City Beach, authorities said.
The animals that died were ruffed lemurs, Valerie Sale, communications chief for Bay County, told USA Today Network. An additional two animals were taken to a veterinarian for treatment.
The fire was reported at 5 a.m. near the backside of an administration building. Crews were on the scene within minutes and the fire was contained by 5:20 a.m.
Portions of the road outside the zoo were shut down for a short time as a precautionary, but open by 8 a.m.
The cause of the fire is not known at this time and being investigated by the fire marshal.
