Concertgoers at Sphere Las Vegas know that the pristine, directional sound tops any other venue experience.
Now, that Sphere Immersive Sound system is able to be used in any venue, including New York’s iconic Radio City Music Hall, where it recently debuted for the 2025 run of the Christmas Spectacular featuring the 100th anniversary of the Rockettes.
The inaugural concert at Radio City to use the specialized technology – a combination of 3D audio beamforming and wave field synthesis – will be the New York Philharmonic’s first performance at the venue Jan. 25 led by conductor Gustavo Dudamel (tickets are on sale at 10 a.m. ET Dec. 12).
But along with the world-renowned, 80-plus-piece orchestra, the new sound system will benefit every act, regardless of genre, that plays the 6,000-capacity venue, establishing it as, currently, the best-sounding large theater in the world.
It is “an unprecedented audio experience,” says Josephine Vaccarello, executive vice president, Live for MSG Entertainment, who adds that the New York Philharmonic is the ideal debut music performance because “fans will be able to hear every single instrument with unmatched clarity and precision.”
The Sphere Immersive Sound system, which boasts of spatialized audio to send sound to specific points in the theater, has also been installed at the 2,800-capacity Beacon Theatre in New York and is adaptable to any size venue, indoors or outside.
What makes the sound superior, Vaccarello explains, is that “whether you’re in the front row of the orchestra or the back of the third mezzanine, the audio experience, including the volume, remains the same. It’s essentially headphone-quality sound without the headphones.”
