EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) -In the latest installation of Motivational Monday Hello Wisconsin’s Ellie Pomerleau highlights Mr. Kitty’s Cat Cafe and Boutique’s 100th adoption and a new project in the works at the cafe that will help support other animals in the Chippewa Valley.
For animal lovers, specifically cat people, it’s almost impossible to resist the urge to take home a cat from Mr. Kitty’s Cat Cafe and Boutique. Especially when they play, nudge you for pets, or even jump up in your lap.
“Every week we get a handful of them adopted out and then on Mondays we work with our partner,” the Owner of Mr. Kitty’s Cat Cafe and Boutique, Shelli Schuppel said. “If we adopt four cats that week we typically get four new cats on Mondays.”
For people who couldn’t resist or didn’t want to resist adopting a cat they helped lead up to a big moment. The 100th adoption. Furcule, formerly known as Furcules, found his fur-ever home and hit a major milestone for the cafe and the Eau Claire County Humane Association. His adoption was cause for celebration.
“We’re going to get a cake so that people that come in can have a piece of cake to celebrate,” Schuppel said. “We’ll do some balloons and hopefully get some special pictures with number 100 adoption.”
The Director of the Eau Claire County Humane Association, Shelley Janke, said the relationship the association has with the cafe has had a major impact.
“We started this adventure not really sure how it would go never having a cat cafe in Eau Claire,” Janke said. “We were excited to try though. There’s so many cats in our community that need homes. It definitely has increased the number of adoptions. Also, who wouldn’t want to live in a place like this versus a shelter? Nothing against a shelter, but it is an animal shelter. There’s hundreds of animals.”
Janke adds although adoptions remain at a consistent rate the cafe has decreased the time animals have had to stay at the shelter or cafe before they are adopted so, there are still plenty of cats available for people looking for a pet. However, Janke said it’s important for people to know if adopting a pet is the right choice for them.
“You have to remember it’s a lifetime commitment,” Janke said. “Animals are something that need daily care. I always tell people you know, evaluate your lifestyle, and make sure you have time for that animal.”
There are always other ways to help support animals in the Chippewa Valley. A new project is in the works at the cafe.
“We’re going to have our own little pet food pantry in the backyard here so that people in need can get cat food, dog food, litter, and such,” Schuppel said. “So, we’re looking for people to support us in donations for that. Not only in building that building but also in supplying so that the needs of the community can be met.”
Schuppel said they are hoping to get a shed built in the backyard of the cafe before the snow starts and any extra hands are appreciated.
