MONROE COUNTY, Mich. – The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Animal Control Division is stepping up enforcement actions against people who abandon domestic animals.
This enforcement follows a “distressing increase in reports and the discovery of several abandoned and neglected dogs and cats,” according to a release from the sheriff’s office.
The neglected animals are particularly found in remote areas near Roberts and Reaume roads in Berlin Township. The most recent report was made on Nov. 16.
“Abandoning a defenseless animal is not just irresponsible; it is a felony offense in the State of Michigan,” said Monroe County Sheriff Troy Goodnough. “We are committing all necessary resources to track down those responsible for these heartless acts. Our community has a zero-tolerance policy for animal cruelty, and we will pursue prosecution to the fullest extent of the law.”
Officials have encountered numerous cats and dogs left without access to food, water, or shelter, with many showing signs of malnutrition.
Several of these cats and dogs have been rescued and are receiving necessary medical care.
The sheriff’s office is partnering with the Humane Society of Monroe County it investigate these cases.
If someone is found guilty of abandoning an animal could face fines, imprisonment, community service and a permanent ban on owning animals, officials said.
People are encouraged to report any information about possible animal abandonment or cruelty to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office at 734-243-7070 or email the office’s Animal Control Division at AnimalControl@monroemi.org .
