Man found dead in water at Comite River Conservation Area linked to hit-and-run crash
BATON ROUGE – A dead man was found in the water at Comite River Conservation Area off Hooper Road Saturday morning, according to the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies said someone walking around the park saw the deceased person in the water around 9 a.m.. The EBRSO maritime team recovered the body.
State Police said the man was identified as 38-year-old Humberto Vasquez, who was involved in a hit-and-run crash Jan. 25 along Tucker Road in Zachary, which runs near the Comite River.
Troopers said Vasquez crossed the center line and hit another driver, 65-year-old Jeffery Variste head on. Variste was taken to a hospital where he later died. Vasquez left the scene on foot and was not found until his body washed up on Saturday.
