Some River Watch residents and conservationists are concerned about a dredging project that’s expected to start this week in an aquatic conservation area off the Indian River Lagoon in St. Lucie County.
The conservation area, consisting of a tidal pool and channel off South Hutchinson Island, is supposed to be protected in perpetuity, but the Florida Department of Environmental Protection permitted the dredging.
Crews can dredge 314 cubic yards of material from a 14,120-square-foot area, but cannot impact seagrasses and other aquatic resources. The permit also states
