Chico the Chihuahua is getting a second chance at life.
In 2024, Jake Roos and his team at People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) discovered a 3-year-old Chihuahua who was chained outside with a bungee cord wrapped around his neck and ticks all over his body. And at the time, they did everything they could to help him.
“We fitted him with a proper collar and gave him food, water, and flea and tick medication,” Roos, a fieldworker for the organization, tells PEOPLE. “We tried to get Chico’s owners to bring Chico inside or let us have Chico, but they refused. The family moved away from that address soon after we first saw him, and we worried about what would happen to Chico.”
But much to their surprise, the team came across Chico again five months later while providing food, water, medication, and other supplies to dogs kept chained up in a rural North Carolina trailer park.
