CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCSC) – The Charleston County Council will decide whether a local non-profit will receive funding for what the organization says will help conservation efforts.
The Lowcountry Land Trust is trying to buy the development rights for more than 1,000 acres. Charleston County Council’s Greenbelt Advisory Board is deciding what projects to fund at its next hearing.
The Land Trust is aiming to get property rights on two lots of land and make it a hub for the wildlife in the area. If approved, officials say it would protect wildlife, store flood water, natural resources and lands.
“So, a conservation easement essentially restricts the private landowner’s right to develop that property in the future,” Eric Davis, Director at Charleston County Housing Development and Land Management Department, said. “It’s going to, if approved, it would protect wildlife, areas that store flood water, natural resources, and lands along the South Santee River.”
The easements are along Highway 17 and Rutledge Road in McClellanville.
