Verona, N.Y. — The owner of a horse stable in Oneida County has been accused of mistreating animals there.
Misty Carey, the owner of MC Stables, was indicted on a single count of aggravated cruelty to animals, a felony, as well as 17 counts of torturing/injuring/not feeding an animal, a misdemeanor.
Carey, 49, was arraigned Monday in Oneida County Court and pleaded not guilty. She was released on her own recognizance.
MC Stables was responsible for boarding, training and racing horses, according to a news release Monday from Robert Maciol, the Oneida County sheriff.
Deputies began investigating the stables in July after receiving a report of malnourished horses at the property in the town of Verona, Maciol said.
Seventeen horses were located, and a veterinarian scored their health “poorly,” he said.
One of the horses appeared to have untreated or neglected injuries, Maciol said. Its condition deteriorated and it needed to be euthanized, he said.
Deputies executed a search warrant days later and removed the remaining horses from the property, Maciol said. They were transported and boarded by volunteers.
