FLINT TOWNSHIP, MI – Police found dozens of neglected animals while serving a search warrant on a Flint Township home Tuesday morning, Feb. 17.
Officers found 61 dogs and three cats alive, living among piles of feces and rotting furniture, and an additional 26 dead dogs and one dead cat.
The dead animals were placed inside trash bags near the front door of the home, police described in a social media post.
Officers worked in shifts to remove living and deceased animals because the ammonia levels inside the home burned the eyes and lungs, police department officials said.
“Conditions like this do not happen overnight,” department officials wrote on social media. “This was prolonged suffering. We documented everything and removed every living animal through conditions that were physically revolting and emotionally draining, because those animals had no one else in that moment.”
The case remains under investigation by Flint Township police.
Flint Township Supervisor Karyn Miller said the home is located on Elms Road, near Beecher Road.
Miller said she hadn’t received complaints about the property previously but said when police met near the property to execute a search warrant, they heard dogs barking.
“I know they were breeding dogs and the dogs had run of the house,” Miller said.
It’s unclear if any arrests were made when the search warrant was executed.
The Flint Township Police Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment Tuesday afternoon.
