As millions of Americans across the country prepare for Thanksgiving feasts, workers and volunteers at the Humane Society of the Harrisburg Area (HSHA) made sure its residents were not left out.
The shelter on Thursday made special meals for about 105 dogs, 65 cats and other critters, including rabbits, guinea pigs and rats.
“It’s inspiring to see this Thanksgiving tradition carried on by our dedicated volunteers for years, so every dog and cat gets some extra love on this holiday,” said Aspasia Yeager, the shelter’s director of operations. “We’re so grateful for the support of dedicated staff and volunteers who donate, prepare and serve up this home-cooked feast to the animals.”
The dogs dined on turkey, potatoes, sweet potatoes, carrots, green beans, pumpkin and whipped cream. The cats were served tuna, chicken, vegetables and pumpkin. Special treats were given to other animals at the HSHA as well.
“It’s one of my favorite times of year. I love the holidays and I spend most of my time at the shelter,” said Alyssa Ginez, behavior coordinator. “It’s really great to spend the first half with our shelter residents, our shelter family, celebrate, and then continue on at home.”
Outside of adopting animals, Ginez said the HSHA is always looking for foster homes, volunteers and people to spread the word about finding homes for every resident animal.
The shelter was closed to the public Thursday, but will reopen for regular operations starting at noon Friday.
