Soil containing polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) was removed in 2019 from land at 1318 Niagara St. at the corner of Lafayette Street, across Niagara from Santasiero’s Restaurant, and it is now a vacant lot.
The DEC noted that the EPA approval was needed because the completed project differed from the original proposal. More soil was taken away than originally planned and the deeper soil that replaced it provides more protection, the DEC said.
The lot, which covers about three-quarters of an acre, was the site of a brewery from 1909 to 1987, the DEC said. After buildings there were demolished in 2006, an underground storage tank was discovered that had leaked hazardous materials, mostly PCBs.
